James A. Coffey, 47 of Essex, MD according to court records, and Bonneauville, PA according to the police, is in the hospital with several possible charges pending, Gettysburg police explained.

It started when Gettysburg police attempted to stop his white Toyota SUV with a Maryland license plate in the 100 Block of York Street "for suspicion of DUI after the vehicle had committed a number of traffic violations," at 10:48 p.m. on Wednesday March, 27 as stated in the release by the department.

When the pursuing officer turned on his lights and sirens Coffey sped up — committing "numerous traffic violations while being pursued," police said.

The chase continued — as Coffey accelerated to speeds over 100 mph — heading out of Gettysburg along the eastbound lanes of Hanover Street, according to the police.

At one point he "failed to negotiate a turn in the roadway in Bonneauville Borough, traveling off the roadway and striking a house," as stated in the release.

The house was damaged but still livable and no one in the home was injured but Coffey suffered "moderate, non-life threatening, injuries" and was taken by ambulance to Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, the Gettysburg police explained.

The SUV was towed from the scene, police explained.

Charges for DUI, Fleeing, and Attempting to Elude, plus numerous summary traffic violations, are expected to be filed against Coffey.

The Pennsylvania State Police assisted the Gettysburg police in this chase.

Coffey has a record of assault, terroristic threats, and DUI in Pennsylvania, court records show.
